Halacha : L’étude de la MichenaParacha Miketz (english version)

Ben Ich Hai parallels the following two events:

      - Yosef is thrown into the well by his brothers... Then Yosef will come out of the well to be sold to merchants.

    - In Egypt, Yosef is thrown into prison and then Pharaoh will call upon him to interpret his dreams.

His rescue from the well was only a sign predicting his release from prison in Egypt.

During his internment in prison, Yosef had to retrieve holy sparks that were captive there.

Yosef's brothers sold him for twenty pieces of silver.

What was the reason for this sum? Yaacov considered Yosef to be the first born (behor) despite the fact that he was the eleventh child. His brothers were jealous of him, knowing that the title of behor conferred a right to royalty (power). This jealousy led them to throw him into the well and then to sell him for twenty pieces of silver. By their action, they split the word בכור (behor) into two בור (bor, the well) and כ (the letter Kaf), which has a numerical value of twenty corresponding to the price of Yossef's sale.

In the end, Yossef came to power as viceroy of Egypt in accordance with the place of behor that Yaacov had conferred on him.

After giving him full powers, Pharaoh dressed him in a robe of byssus (fine linen). In Hebrew, byssus is called שש (Chech). What allusion can we find in this word?

    1. Like all men, Yosef had two inclinations יצר (Yezer, inclination, a word that has a numerical value of ש, three hundred) a good and a bad one. Yosef overcame his bad inclination, transforming it into a second good inclination (two identical ש, chines) and as such deserved to have a byssus garment (שש).

    2. In Egypt, Yosef did not succumb to bad morals and by this fact he became the symbol of the sixth sphere which is the Yesod (foundation of the world, the world rests on respect for the covenant of good morals).

Also, Yossef deserves to have a הא (hey which has a numerical value of six) added to his first name (יהוסף,Yossef, cf psalm 81 recited every Thursday morning) to underline his attachment to the sphere of the Yesod.

Respect for the Yesod is the guarantee that his sustenance will not disappear and that he deserves new benefits. In this sense, Yosef was the one who managed all the sustenance of Egypt.

We find several times the value six attached to Yosef.

    1. Pharaoh's throne was at the seventh step of a staircase; Yosef's throne was at the sixth step of the staircase.

    2. The numerical value of Yosef 156 (יוסף) is equal to 6 x 26 (the numerical value of the name HAShem).

    3. Yaacov taught Yosef the Oral Torah which is composed of six volumes of Mishena.
